Life Care Planning
Families often struggle as they help a loved one in a time of need. While many seniors plan their wills and estates, many do not plan for crisis. Families often find themselves at a loss when severe illness sets in or a catastrophic event occurs.
In addition to having legal documents in place, planning for crisis with Sanchez and Baietto will provide a security that legal documents alone cannot give. It is important that the financial documents you have thoughtfully prepared work together with planning for long term care and crisis situations. Too often people do not think about planning for crisis when they are estate planning and as a result, crucial decisions are left unmade. Appropriate, complete planning with Sanchez and Baietto will give the individual and their family members peace of mind knowing that mom and/or dad’s wishes will be honored, and their care needs met in a way that preserves dignity and family unity.
We believe the family is the best first point of contact. Our goal is to meet with the entire family including the parent(s) or other senior, if possible, spouses, children and important outside family members who have played a large part in the family dynamic and help the family develop a workable long term care plan for their loved one.
Many seniors today plan their wills, estates and so on. But few think about care options if they become ill or have some catastrophic event. Sanchez and Baietto can help individuals and their families develop a plan that includes the supports and the necessary documentation needed to effectuate that plan. It will give the individual and their family members peace of mind knowing that mom and/or dad’s wishes will be honored, and their care needs are met in a way that preserves dignity and family unity.
Different people may have different feelings on how a situation concerning a loved one should be handled. Past conflicts can spill into present circumstances. Individuals in different geographical locations and different economic positions can feel overwhelmed and may find working together as a family difficult. Family dynamics and individual contributions often times impacts the opinion of how an estate should be bequeathed. We can help the family return to thoughtful decision making in an informal, comfortable setting and at the same time help plan for both the immediate and long term care of your loved one.
Common Issues May Include:
Medical Decisions: The best medical route for your senior’s care may not be clear or apparent. You and your siblings may have different but strongly held opinions about the route to take.
- Medication decisions
- Care options
- Hospital decisions
- Transportation
- Medical power of attorney
- End of life decisions
Finances
- Power of attorney
- Sale of real or personal property
- Investment decisions
Guardianship Decisions: Perhaps an individual can no longer handle particular tasks. Typically as people age, they exhibit inconsistent abilities. Your senior may be capable of living alone but needs help with transportation or paying bills. Mediation can prevent unnecessary guardianships.
Post Guardianship Appointment Decisions: Even after a guardian is appointed there are many ongoing decisions to make which family conflict may continue to impede.
Residence Decisions: Can the senior stay in their home? What level of care and assistance do they need? What makes the most sense financially? If the house is sold, who should get what? How do you decide what is “fair”? And do you all agree on the definition for fair?
